Anyway, where was I? Heading southwest from Wheaton? Uh... right! Anyway, I kept walking, and walking, and came upon two tall buildings. There are some fortifications indicating it's probably held by raiders. But there was nobody outside. I found the main door, which was labeled Bethesda East.
I walked in with my hunting rifle ready, and there was nobody in the lobby except a few radroaches. I explore and looted every desk and see, and did find more than a few junk items, which I left in place. I had to climb to the second floor before I run into any raiders, but they are dumb. I shot one in the head, switched to combat shotgun, then shot the next one when she came running in, and the shotgun took her leg off. No one else came. I stripped her combat shotgun to repair mine, then stripped them out of armor and whatever else useful. I also did a little repair on my hunting rifle.
There was a room with an obvious pressure plate trap in the middle. I walked around it carefully... It was rigged with no less than FIVE combat shotgun traps. As my defusing skills are minimal, I left it alone. I could use the guns and ammo later if I ever come back this way.
I continued exploring and eventually came to the exit... except it's on the wrong floor. I opened it, and it's a bridge between two buildings... and a raider was looking down from the bridge toward the street. I shot him before he realized it wasn't his buddy raiders. And it was a sniper rifle. Fortunately, I did happen upon a few more .308 bullets earlier, and there is more ammo in the bins next to him.
By this time, it was evening, but not full night yet. I decided to keep exploring. I walked across the bridge into Bethesda West. I kept clearing the rooms, and killed the few raiders I found lurking in the area. I got careless at the stairs and a flamer raider almost cooked me. Fortunately, grenades work great even when you're almost blinded by fire (and I have exactly one). And I did find a few in the ammo bins I found before. I moved all the loot to the first aid box I found near the lobby, drank some water in the restroom sink, reloaded my gun, and walked through the front door of Bethesda West.
At first, things look quiet, until a bullet pinged next to me from the left. And there they are, more raiders. I ducked behind the columns and returned fire. They were engaging me in at least two directions, and the column can't protect me from both. I charged for the ruins across the street. I was pretty sure there was a sniper up there, and with the mines I picked up earlier I can defend myself. I ran for the stairs up and left two mines in my wake. I took two grazing hits in the meanwhile. Then the floor blocked their fire. I kept climbing, looking for the perch, and found it. The sniper was just standing up and turning toward me. My first shot caught him in the knee. He almost toppled, and the next shot went through his torso. He fell back and out the opening onto the street below.
From there it was simple mop-up against the three raiders left below. One of them tried to rush me, and the mine sent him flying, then dead. The other two tried to shoot me but I had the sniper rifle and it was no contest. Two minutes later, they are all dead.
I gathered up their loot and consolidated stuff. I can't carry it all, so I took the stuff that's worth the most, the guns, and left the rest in a container I used to store loot earlier just inside the building.
I ate some food and drank some water, then continued toward Southwest.
