Day 2 (actual date unknown)

After walking out of Bethesda West with my most valuable loot, I continued walking southwest. I found a place to cross without getting myself wet in the Potomac. No critters or humans bothered me. I ended up walking into the little town of Springvale... Right into a couple more raiders. Fortunately, I was ready for them, as they announced themselves by yelling "Fresh meat!"  But when you pit baseball bat against hunting rifle, rifle wins.

The other guy has a revolver, but he barely winged me before I put a round through his skull. After looting them, I can see Megaton due south, and I headed that way. Turns out the entrance is on the south side, and I had to jog around it.

I got to the south side, and noticed there's a guy up on the crow's nest but he doesn't have a gun. I wonder why?  This is close to raider hideouts, and I guess they have to deal with raiders every once in a while. Anyway, there's a Protectron!  I've heard of those, but never seen one up close.

"Welcome to Megaton. The bomb is perfectly safe. We promise." The protectron recited in robot voice. I waited, but there was no further greeting. However, the main door did slide up, revealing the real entrance to Megaton.

I entered, and was immediately greeted by a man wearing cowboy hat and wearing a sheriff's star.

"Name's Lucas Simms, town sheriff, and mayor too, when the need arises."

"Nice to meet you, sheriff. The pleasure is mine."

"Ah, polite and educated! A rarity in the wastelands. But just so long as we understand each other, This here is my town. These are my people. You so much as breathe wrong, and I'm gonna fuckin' end ya. Do we understand each other?"

"Crystal clear, sheriff. You will get no trouble from me. As you can see, I am a regulator myself. We are in the same business."

"I should pay my respects to Samara."

"Uh... don't you mean Sonora Cruz?"

Simms grinned, and I knew I just passed a test.

"Yes, I do.  Anyway, if you need supplies, there's Moira up there at Craterside. For food, the Brass Lantern is at the bottom. For drinks, you could head up to Moriarty's, but it's a dangerous place. The doc at the clinic at the bottom can fix you up. If you need to sleep, check with Nova in the Saloon. Or you can sleep in the common house for free. Any other questions?"

"What's with that bomb in the middle?"

"Ah, our namesake! It's still live, you know."

I scowled, but Simms just shrugged. "It's been active for years like that. Nobody dared touch it. And unless you have some real explosive skills, you shouldn't either. But tell you what..."  Simms scratched his chin a bit, "I'll give you 100 caps if you can defuse it. My son lives here and I really want to see him grow up, you see."

"I'll keep that in mind, sheriff." I winced. I can just imagine the amount of tension and training required to defuse an hydrogen bomb like that.

"Will there be anything else? No? Have a good day now,"  Simms walked off, no doubt to patrol around town, not that I see any particularly rowdy types.

I read the signs, then walked up the ramp toward Craterside Supplies. I opened the door, and was immediately assaulted by various noxious smells and smoke. My eyes watered, and I reached behind me to keep the door open.

"Hey! Don't mind the smell! I was just testing a few chemicals, but it's perfect safe to breathe! Really!" A woman's voice spoke from within. I blinked several times to clear my eyes, and the smoke finally cleared. I headed back inside, and a young woman with her hair in a ponytail and wearing a Robco jumpsuit greeted me.

"Uh, you're Moira?"

"Yes! I'm Moira Brown. I run Createrside Supply, but what I really do is mostly tinkering and research!"

"You got anything for sale?"

"Of course!"

So I handed some of the weapons and stuff to her and got caps, and most of the caps went back to her for repairs on the weapons I do want to keep.

I asked her a couple mor questions, but it's time to go exploring.
