Day 2, Part 3/3

The buzz through town was electric, as the news of me having saved Simms had spread among the inhabitants. People seem to treat me with more respect now.

I left Megaton and headed north. Springvale is just ruins, and I went inside Springvale Elementary. It was rather sad looking, skeletons everywhere, book strewn all over the place, desks placed haphazardly. And yes, there are even children's skeletons.

I crouched and slowly moved from room to room, finding little if any loot worthwhile. Then I heard voices... Raiders. I edged around the corner and the motion must of drawn their eye, because they both noticed me and charged. One brandished a pool cue, the other a pistol. I almost laughed, as I aimed my hunting rifle and fired. The range was so close I can't really miss. The bullet went through the pistoleer's left eye, and took off most of his head. The pool cue wielder, was still 3 yards away when I shot him through the heart. He fell face down and did not get up.

I retreated into the storage room and quickly reloaded the rifle, figured that reinforcements will follow, and the raiders did not disappoint. I was crouched and waited in the darkest corner, but the room was small. Still, it was enough. Three more raiders rushed past, and I was able to shoot one in the back before the other two noticed, but they can't engage me unless they choose to expose themselves. When they rushed me, I shot one in the leg and the other in the head. The one in the leg tried to limp away, but I put him out of his misery.  I collected fingers and loot, and used one of the lockers near the main door as my temporary stash. I noticed a key with a keytag "library". I explored the ground floor, but did not find any more raiders. A staircase lead upstairs, and that's where I went next.

Second floor looks cleaner. Wonder if the raider leader lives up here? Was the guy I got the key from his second? I snuck around the rooms, and when I saw the coast was clear, I found a room with more raiders. And I shot them in the back. Others returned fire, and I ducked into cover, and swapped to my 10mm SMG. For close-range fight against unarmored targets, SMG works great. And soon enough two raiders rushed me. But they were surprised I was this close when they came around the corner, and two bursts at point-blank range left their blood splattered across the opposite wall. A dog charged me too, but it died as well.

I continued to explore and came upon a locked door. I tried the key I got earlier, and it worked. As soon as it opened, I was hit. I rolled left, then rolled again, as bullets ricocheted around me. I found a desk to duck behind, and I finally saw the raider leader wielding an SMG like mine.  He sneered, "You are dead meat!"  But he can't hit me. I pulled one of my precious grenades and lobbed it at him. I can hear "Oh shit!" as he dove out of cover, but he was too late. The explosion sent him flying 10 ft across the room. I rushed him, but saw he was done for. His neck was at a crooked angle.

I looted him and found a key for the basement. I explored a bit, but I can't find any more raiders. I did come across a terminal wtih entries claiming that the previous leader, by the name of Boppo, was shot by Lucas Simms while attacking Megaton. His second, the guy I just killed, embarked on a new project, something about wanting to tunnel into Vault 101. Oh, really?  They think they can *dig* into Vault 101? How... naive. Vault dwellers are not stupid. While looting, I found a Nuka-Cola Quantum, and a book titled Duck and Cover. While the book is old, I was able to read it.

I moved the loot downstairs to my stash locker, found the basement door, and entered. Several more raiders charged me, but they all got lead poisoning (haha). I came across the locked door that that the key opened with no problem. I headed down carefully and slowly, looking for threats. Indeed, they were tunnelling somewhere.  I folowed the tunnel slowly.

What was that sound?

Just as I noticed the bodies ahead, chittering noises came from two directions ahead. I turned and ran back, not wanting to be flanked. And sure enough, several giant ants rushed me. With some judicial apply of burst fire, the ants are all dead. I found an assault rifle next to one of the bodies. And that's all there is. Apparently these are just regular wasteland folks, nabbed by the raiders for their labor. And they disturbed giant ants. Such rotten luck. I looted the ant carcasses and the bodies, and found a copy of Chinese Army manual. Then I walked back up to school's main floor.

I checked all the rooms again, and noticed there's another exit near the back. I walked out, and was greeted immediately by bullets and yells. I took a few hits before finding all the enemies. At least three raiders are attacking. One from level 2 was shooting, while two from my level were charging in with a shovel and a tire iron respectively. I engaged VATS and sent one burst into each's right arm, from closest to farthest. The burst against the shooter upstairs missed as that raider dove into cover. But the other two bursts hit, and both raiders dropped their weapons. I rolled into cover of a broken staircase. The two guys downstairs were trying to pick up their weapons and I shot them down where they stood.

The guy upstairs hadn't given up. I swtiched to hunting rifle, strafed out of cover slowly, and there he was. How does he expect to hit any one firing a rifle from the hip? I took aim, and shot him through the chest twice.  There were no more raiders.  I finally took stock of the area. This appears to be the rear half of the school, most of which was open to the sky, and appears to be the gym area with lockers and stuff. Nothing worth looting here though except the bodies.

I consolidated the loot and moved them back into school itself in the stash locker, and mutualed repaired them to improve their value to weight density. Yes, I know big words like that. Uncle Owen showed me on the Pip-Boy a long time ago.

It's getting late in the day, and I picked the most valuable loot and walked them back to to Megaton. I need to sell them before Moira closes for the day. The Chinese assault rifle wasn't particularly valuable, but it can help repair my Wanda.

I need to find a vault dweller or a genuine scientist. I wonder what can they tell me about me?
